Origins, Evolution, and Current Status of ESSCA-USA
The Equatorian South Sudanese Community Association-USA (ESSCA-USA) is a non-profit, community-based organization dedicated to representing individuals of Equatorian descent in the United States. Equatorians are those with origins in the former Equatoria region in the southern part of South Sudan. The organization was initially established as Equatoria Family in the State of Missouri in 2000 by a group of South Sudanese from Equatoria, with a primary focus on advocating for Equatoria refugees in the United States.
In 2002, at a conference in Omaha, Nebraska, the association expanded its mission and changed its name to Equatorian Sudanese Community Association-USA. Following the independence of South Sudan in 2011, the name was further adjusted to Equatorian South Sudanese Community Association – USA. ESSCA-USA is incorporated in the State of Iowa and holds a federal non-profit, tax-exempt 501(c)(3) status. The association consists of 25 state chapters across the United States and collaborates with these chapters to advance its objectives and serve the interests of Equatorians in the United States

Equatorians are the inhabitants of the southern region of South Sudan, encompassing Eastern, Central, and Western Equatoria. This region is home to 32 distinct tribes.
Mundari Tribe
Western Equatoria
Western Equatoria is the largest state in Equatoria, encompassing an area of 79,343 square kilometers. It is inhabited by 8 different tribes, with the Azande constituting the largest tribe in the entire Equatoria region.
Central Equatoria
Central Equatoria is a state located in South Sudan, spanning an area of 43,033 square kilometers, and it holds the distinction of being the second largest among the original states in South Sudan. Home to 11 distinct tribes, Central Equatoria is notably inhabited by the Pojulu tribe, one of its larger tribal communities.
Eastern Equatoria
Eastern Equatoria is the smallest state in the Equatoria region, covering an area of 28,367 square kilometers. It consists of 8 counties, with its capital located in Torit. Eastern Equatoria is home to 18 tribal groups, with the Toposa being the largest tribe.
